I’m constantly balancing what I like versus what’s commercially and I guess publicly desired. I used to shoot a lot of landscapes, shit you would see on postcards, where you can spend an hour setting up for one shot, waiting until the light is perfect. So I’m always trying to chase that perfect shot, the right balance of colours, the way it’s framed, telling a story, etc.
My style is about having the subject fill the frame with big, bright colours. It’s just what I enjoy looking at so it’s what I try to create. I don’t always get to shoot shit just for myself, being able to understand the brand you’re working for is really important to deliver good work.
At a race my general motto is to work harder than anyone else. I ride or run around courses where possible so I can get better coverage. I climb shit, and I generally just try to avoid whatever other photographers are doing so I don't end up with the same stuff as someone else.
At a road race like Nationals it’s hard work; it’s always bloody hot and I’m riding the course in my sneakers with a heavy pack full of gear. But the hustle always pays off.
I love doing brand shoots because I get to bring my ideas to life with cool people. I love seeing people who are passionate about their brand and their vision for what they want to create, I feed off that.
My favourite photogs are without a doubt Beardy and TBS. It’s inspiring to look at what those guys are doing but also devastating sometimes. They’re on a level so far beyond everyone else in my opinion.
